APOLO

Advanced POwer conversion technoLogies based on Onboard ammonia cacking through novel membrane reactors

APOLO aims to decarbonize the maritime sector by developing and demonstrating scalable ammonia-to-power systems. The project will deliver two 125 kW pilot units: one integrating an ammonia cracker with a PEM fuel cell (51–54% efficiency) and another coupling a partial cracker with a 4-stroke engine (efficiency >45%). These technologies will be optimized for flexibility and environmental performance, targeting vessels in the 1–10 MW range. Through advanced power conversion solutions and life cycle assessments, APOLO sets the foundation for clean ammonia-based propulsion for the first 30,000 ships in the global fleet.
